#51 - Fathers of Reggae Part 2

Bunny Wailer On this episode, I honor more of reggae’s founding fathers. After listening back to the show, I realized I made a mistake regarding an engineer on the Abyssinians - Satta Massagana album. I said Clive Chin but the correct name is Clive Hunt. If you missed Fathers of Reggae Part 1, please check episode #36 for a show featuring Gregory Isaacs, Bob Marley, and Freddie McGregor.

#50 - A Fool

Alton EllisReggae Rhythm Update reaches a small milestone with 50 episodes. First up is one of my favorite rhythms, Alton Ellis’ precious and short, “A Fool.” After that, it’s another version excursion with Otis Gayle’s version of the Spinners’ “I’ll Be Around.” Both of these are Studio One rhythms. One correction: At the 1:42 mark I say, “90 minutes of Studio One brilliance.” I meant to say “90 seconds…” in reference to the very short Alton Ellis track that is about to end.

Alton Ellis - A Fool
Tony Tuff - Try a Little Thing
Carlton Livingston - Class of ‘69
Papa Tullo - To You 12″
Leroy Mafia - I’m in the Mood
Dennis Brown - You’ve Got the Best of Me
Freddie McGregor - Know Jah
Otis Gayle - I’ll Be Around
Sound Dimension - I’ll Be Around Version
Johnny Osbourne - We Need Love
Donna Marie & Peter Spence - I’ll Be Around

#49 - Baltimore

Kofi Kingston

Up first is wrestler Kofi Kingston’s “S.O.S.” theme music by Collie Buddz. If you haven’t seen Kofi Kingston’s ring entrance, check out ECW on the Sci-Fi channel. Kingston’s entrance is quite a production, with the music, the lights, and the huge Jamaican flag lit up across the stage. Next up is a great, high-energy Morgan Heritage song, “Raid Rootz Dance” which borrows from Steel Pulse. Later on in the show, it’s the “Baltimore” rhythm. Next show is the fiftieth!

Collie Buddz - S.O.S.
Morgan Heritage - Raid Rootz Dance
Richie Spice - Open the Door
Chezidek - Inna di Road
Peter Spence & Tippa Irie - War
Tamlins - Baltimore

#48 - Well Pleased

Jackie MittooThis all instrumental show begins at the foundation, with the immortal Studio One rhythm, “Rockfort Rock.” After that it’s all ’70s instrumentals, some of them dread, funky, and soulful like Negril’s “Rasta,” and some of them sugary sweet like Familyman’s “Well Pleased” and Jackie Mittoo’s “Ram Jam.” Listen to the horn, keyboard, and guitar leads while moving to the rhythm section. Back then, it took a great band to make a great song.

Prince Francis & Sound Dimension - Rockfort Rock
Jack Ruby & the Black Disciples - Free Rhodesia
Negril - Rasta
Familyman & the Rebel Arms - Well Pleased
Jackie Mittoo - Ram Jam
Augustus Pablo - Upfull Living
Wailers Band & Lloyd Willis - Natty Dread
Zap Pow - Jah Haawn
Tommy McCook & the Supersonics - West Street Special
Augustus Pablo & Soul Syndicate - Golden Seal

#47 - Half Pint Interview and Feature

Half PintOne of the great things about doing this show is that I get to speak to some of my musical heroes. Half Pint is one of those artists that I discovered while doing my radio show at Emerson College in Boston. Starting one night, young ladies would call and request his new song at the time, “Substitute Lover.” That song turned out to be one of my all-time favorites, along with “Level the Vibes,” with which I’d open my show week after week. With last night’s performance in Los Angeles, Half Pint began his U.S. tour. Visit his web site for the latest tour updates. I spoke to him over the phone from his hotel room. I think you’re going to love what he says about his musical mission to uplift people. Plus you’ll hear some great stories about the musical climate in Jamaica during the ’60s, big labels like Studio One and Treasure Isle, the rhythm duo of Sly & Robbie, and much more. Due to a recent tweak of the Golden Touch studio, the sound quality has improved so you will hear the artist clearly. In other news, Reggae Rhythm Update has new Facebook and Twitter pages.
