#41 – Joe Gibbs Tribute
Joe Gibbs passed away in a Kingston hospital on February 21st. This episode is a tribute to him, with a great capsule career overview by England’s most prolific reggae producer, the Mad Professor. The program begins with some of Joe Gibbs’ earliest work and moves chronologically, right up to Steely & Clevie’s 2002 tribute album called Old to the New. Very good tribute to one of the pioneers of Reggae music. Joe Gibbs has been an icon of Reggae Music. My condolence to his family.

Joshua, this is an outstanding show. I like it alost as much as the “Stars” show you did back in December of 2007.
Yeah, a lot of us have heard these songs many times before, but when you assemble them in this way and punctuate it with your commentary and that of the Mad-One, it makes its point articulately: Joe Gibbs was golden and the music of yesteryear was pretty glorious.

I played on a number of Joe Gibbs productions in the early 80s, and quite frankly, Joe was never in the studio as a producer when I worked there. Not once. (I can’t speak about the seventies period as I was not there.) He did pass through occasionally to check on things.
The actual production work at that time was done by the late great engineer Errol Thompson (not to be confused with the radio DJ of the same name, also deceased) with assistance from engineer and singer Ruddy Thomas, the great guitarist Willie Lindo, and other musicians and artists around the studio. Joe spent most of his time in Miami overseeing the manufacturing and distribution operations of the label. In the movie industry he would have been considered the executive producer.
That being said, the Mighty Two (as Joe and Errol called themselves) were responsible for a lot of great music during a very important period of its development.
